If one is to believe the lore, Durango means "water town",
taking it's name from the beautiful
Animas River. A river which has been a lifeline in many ways,
since the humble beginnings of this community.
Durango Colorado, like many towns in the expansion of the West,
realized it's growth due to the railroad. The city was incorporated
in 1881 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad to serve the San
Juan mining district.
The Durango Silverton
Train, as some now affectionately refer to it, has traded
it's gold and silver cargo for nearly a quarter million visitors
a year.
Nearing the latter part of the 1800's, Durango began to blossom,
as the railroad offered jobs and business opportunities.
