Durango Colorado Tourism

Tourism remains the major industry of southwestern Colorado.

The Durango area is a safe, secure and wonderful place to travel; offering Western, archeological, historic and Native American vacation experiences.

Activities include skiing, snowboarding, rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, camping, horseback rides, hunting, fishing, backcountry and mining tours, golfing, rock climbing, live concerts, gaming, art gallery walks and much more.

The major tourist attractions include Mesa Verde National Park, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Durango Mountain Resort (formerly Purgatory Ski Resort) and the San Juan National Forest.

Many tourists arrive in Durango by way of air transportation through the Durango-La Plata County Airport.

Today, the city is known for tourism and world class skiing. Every year hundreds of thousands of tourists ride back into history on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, visit dramatic Mesa Verde National Park, run the rapids on the Animas River, ski the slopes of Durango Mountain Resort, or find hundreds of other activities in Durango.

Durango is served by three airlines, United Express from Denver, America West from Phoenix, and Rio Grande Air from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Durango has a four season climate featuring mild temperate summers and cool snowy winters. In July, the warmest month, daily highs climb to 85 degrees with evening lows of 50 degrees.

In January, the coldest month, daily highs average 39.5 degrees with evening lows of 10.5 degrees The city receives 68 inches of snowfall beginning in October and continuing through May with 16 plus inches falling in December and January.

Durango receives an average of 19.2 inches of rainfall annually. Summertime temperatures are mild with low humidity. The average annual humidity is 40%. Fall is short and relatively dry and cool.

According to the local chamber of commerce, the cost of living in Durango is about 94% of the national average. The State of Colorado imposes a five percent tax on all income. However, the first $20,000 of public and private pensions are exempt for those age 55 and older.

Social Security benefits are only taxed if, because of other earnings, part of your Social Security is taxable at the federal level.
